NSAC is Idle-Free
The Story:
NSAC has partnered with Drivewiser, a program of Clean
Nova Scotia and Conserve NS, to designate the campus as
an idle-free zone. Students, staff and visitors are encouraged
to not idle their cars unnecessarily. By shutting off our
engines, not only will we save on gas, we will reduce the
amount of climate change emissions released into the atmosphere.
The Numbers:
• The average driver idles 5-10 minutes per day
• An idling engine burns 1.5 litres of fuel per hour
• 'No idle' signs are posted in 10 locations on campus
The Facts:
• Idling more than 10 seconds wastes more fuel then
restarting your car
• Idling produces more exhaust emissions than an engine
in motion
• Across Canada, idling engines account for 1.7 million
litres of wasted fuel per day
•If Canadians stopped idling for just three minutes
a day, we would save 630 million
litres of fuel and 1.4 million tones of carbon dioxide emissions
