On-campus Steam Plant Fuels Big Savings
The Story:
Back in 1988, the decision to build an on-campus steam plant
was made. Twenty years later, it has proved to be a smart
investment. While oil is still used to supplement the wood
boiler in times of high demand and during the summer months,
about 78 per cent of the steam produced is thanks to wood.
The Numbers:
- Total money saved since 1988:
$4,243,863.95
- Fuel saved last year by burning wood: 1,255,000
liters
- Total CO2 diverted: 3,989,645 kg CO2
Note: an NSAC heating season is from September to May

The Facts:
- One car puts out approximately 7,700 kg CO2 a year
- The amount
of CO2 NSAC saves by not burning fuel is equivalent to
removing approximately 518 cars from the road for
one year

only option.
