Campus copiers and printers approach/results
Document management at a university is an on-going challenge.
With the help of Xerox and its proprietary XOPA tool, NSAC's
entire printer, copier and multifunction device fleet has
undergone an environmental impact assessment. The assessment
included all departments and division on-campus and yielded
staggering potential results.
Each assessment gives the department or division a detailed
accounting of their business machine operation including
annual costs (direct and indirect), a map of machines in
the office and a sustainability score for energy use, solid
waste and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
Xerox then works with the department or division to develop recommendations to reduce energy use, solid waste, GHG emissions and operating costs. The recommendations also include ways to save staff time.
Departments and divisions are free to decide which recommendations
they will implement and which they will not. Once all, some,
or none of the recommendations are made, a revised sustainability
score is given based on those changes.
The Potential Overall Numbers:
- Electricity saved in one year: 88 million BTUs
- Solid waste diverted in one year: 1 ton
- Greenhouse gases diverted in one year: 13,758 lbs
- Total direct costs saved in one year per department/division: $5,524
- Total direct costs saved in one year for NSAC: $37,000
The Facts:
- An average house uses approximately 16,425 kilowatt hours each year
- If all NSAC fleet assessment changes are made, enough
energy will be saved to power more than two Canadian homes
for one year

Note: Results will change
as departments implement more recommendations, so keep checking
back.
