Recruitment Update
- Monica is in Colombia this week visiting a series of high schools as part of a trip that has been co-ordinated through EduNova. We are working with the education agency Study Union and Monica reports already three schools with students very interested in programs of study at NSAC.
- Back at the home front, Janet and Ashley have been busy responding to e-mail inquiries, conducting campus tours and following up with students who attended University Day.
- Sponsorships: Ski Wentworth hosted a national ski event that brought 120 junior high and senior high students from across Canada plus their parents to Wentworth, February 26 - 27. NSAC was a proud sponsor of this event. Marketing provided giveaways for their welcome bags and Recruitment sponsored a nutrition break and had promotion materials in the lodge.
NSAC Students Attend NSDA Rural Leaders Conference

On Friday, March 5, 10 of the 13 students from the leadership program attended the Rural Leaders Conference in Halifax at the Lord Nelson hotel. Sessions for the day included: Positive communication strategies, NS Outstanding Young Farmer, The Changing Face of Rural NS, Social Media, 5'C of Remarkable Leaders, Healthy Communities, Succession Planning for Your Organization, Effective Communications, Beyond the Bake Sale & Church Supper Community Fundraising, and ended off the day with Bill Gordan speaking about Outstanding Organizations, Outstanding People.
There were sessions that appealed to everyone within our group. One of the sessions helped open our eyes to the changes within rural Nova Scotia and how rural communities are going to be affected from the growing populations moving to urban centers. Dr. Jane Lewis of CBU spoke about positive communication strategies that leads people to realize that leadership is a practice not a position. Bill Gordon finished off with the 10 outstanding organizational situations and how you would rate within certain situations.
The students comments were all positive towards the conference.
New Face in Department
Good afternoon:
As executive director of Policy and Planning, it is my pleasure to welcome Erik Nowak to the post of OHS administrator. Erik will be based in Halifax and over the course of the next month or so will be making the rounds of Truro, Pictou and our regional offices to get to know you and your work. I'll let Erik introduce himself...
I would like to take this opportunity to formerly introduce myself. As of March 9, 2010, I assumed the position of OHS administrator for the Department of Agriculture and Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture. I will be stepping in for Tim Delaney who has taken on an acting post as manager of laboratory services. I look forward to undertaking this position and working with you all.
To give you all a little background about myself: My formal education and training in OHS has been obtained by the completion of my MBA, concentrating in OHS from the Sobeys School of Business at Saint Mary's University, as well as work experience with the Canadian Coast Guard in a Search and Rescue and OHS advisor capacity, as well as
experience working as a firefighter with the Department of National Defense, both of which I feel will aide me in this current role.
