Stephanie Rogers, co-ordinator of Alumni and Public Relations,

The process to replace her with a term appointment is moving

In the mean time please forward all media requests, news story
ideas and other things that might have gone to Stephanie to Jim
Goit, jgoit@nsac.ca or 893-7950,
so it can be looked after by someone in the office. News stories

New Aquatic Manager
Scotia Pool Management Board would like to welcome Steve Quinn
as its new Aquatic Manager. Steve will be with us for one year
while Juanita Walker is on maternity leave. Steve's background
in coaching, aquatics and facility management lends well to
our facility and community.
Steve
swam at the National level as an age group swimmer, senior
and varsity athlete.
After his swimming career, Steve began coaching and has since
coached two varsity national champions at UNB Fredericton,
and a SWAD athlete that broke the Pan American and National
record
in the 200 butterfly.
Most recently, Steve was the head coach of the Miramichi Whitecaps
for the past two seasons in New Brunswick. During this period,
Steve was also named to Team Canada's National Development
Team for SWAD athletes. Steve was awarded the Speedo Domestic
Excellence Award by Swimming Canada for his efforts in 2006/2007.
In addition to the operation of Scotia Pool , Steve's expertise
will be utilized in a new program. The program, EXCELL SWIMMING,
will focus on stroke, technique, kicking and streamlining for
all four of the competitive swimming strokes. It will be offered
to youth 10-14 years of age and is designed for those individuals
who
want
to improve
their
skills
in the
water. This will be done by personalizing the
program to meet each participant's needs.
We welcome youth with all aquatic backgrounds: competitive,
lifesaving, or if you just like to swim for fun and exercise.
The program will be offered on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday
3:30-5 p.m. It will run for an eight-week period - January
14 - March 7. The cost will be $100 for the full program, or
$5 per session on a drop-in basis.
For information on this new program, or the Scotia Pool schedule,
please contact Steve or any other staff member at Scotia Pool
for details at 893-6364 or scotiapool@ns.sympatico.ca
The management and staff at Scotia Pool would like to thank all patrons for their continued support in 2008.
January Wellness Tip
Avoid that afternoon slump
Eating between meals can keep your energy up and your weight
down. Choose snacks that combine carbohydrates
with protein for a pick-me-up that lasts. Try these: carrots
and
hummus, apple slices and peanut butter, or cheese on whole
wheat crackers. Because peanut butter, hummus, and cheese
are high in fat, it's best to limit your daily servings of
these.
Meet the Grads Evening
The Atlantic Institutes of Agrologists, in conjunction with
Nova Scotia Agricultural College, invites
graduating students to a "Meet the
Grads" evening to be
held at the Best Western Glengarry, Willow Street, Truro, N.S.
on
Wednesday, January 23, 2008.
The "Meet the Grads" evening provides an excellent opportunity for grad students to
network with professionals in the industry, to become acquainted with the
range of opportunities in the field of agriculture, and to learn of job
opportunities that might be available to you.
We encourage graduating students to attend this event as it is a great first step in
venturing out into the working world.
For more information, please see the attached "Meet the Grads Student
Poster".
If you have any questions or require any additional information, don't
hesitate to contact me.

Grad Studies Info Booth - Jan 15th
During the next few months, you'll notice Jill Rogers and
her team making their way through our corridors, setting up
displays, posting information and talking to students about
NSAC Graduate Studies. As part of our strategy, Jill and I
have met to create a plan that increases the awareness of NSAC
Grad Studies among our existing B.Sc. students. I've traveled
to MUN, and Jill and I have gone to Dalhousie this past fall
to represent NSAC at Grad Studies fairs. We've been well received
so far
and decided to make an extra effort at home. Please drop by
the information booth tomorrow, Jan 15th from 8:30 a.m. - 1
p.m. to talk to Jill about the program. You could be an important
link between our students and Graduate Studies here at NSAC.
Keep your eyes peeled for the new installments of our recruitment
suite of materials. NSAC Graduate Studies is slated to be our
next booklet. We'll keep you posted on upcoming events for
Grad Studies awareness over the next months.
All the best,
Monica
NSAC Recruitment Hits an All Time
High in 2008
As you are aware, our recruitment team has been working hard
to maintain a momentum that has been building over the past
two years. We've reached an all time high - record breaking
number of prospective students in our database. At this time
last year, we were very happy with sitting at 500 - that's
a great number for a university our size. This year, we're
closing in on 1000! That's correct, almost 1000 names of grade
11
and 12 students in our database since September. These are
students who have been entered on the basis of interest in
NSAC programs and who have been contacting us through school
fairs, on-line, through the website and by telephone.
Since September's intake, we've been talking to our current
first year students to get a better understanding of what they
feel we do well and what we can improve on in Recruitment.
In general, I am pleased to report that our current strategy
is
working and has been well received. Since focusing on our target
towns, local students and those with rural backgrounds, we
have been able to reach more serious prospects. Included in
this group are now FFA students from
New England. We are receiving more telephone calls and e-mails
from the U.S. than any other time that I can remember. Another
point of achievement is Ashley's success in booking the first
tour of NSAC for the Truro Adult High School on January 22nd.
This group of students fits our non-traditional student profile.
Finally, we're on the road again and this time we're visiting
guidance counselors,
teachers, career services, principals and other influencers
to present our new materials and International Food Business
degree. So far, the schools we've visited are impressed with
our strategy
and efforts.
Finally, please remember that University Day is on March 3rd
this year. We're meeting with the Promotions Recruitment Committee
next Wednesday to finalize changes to the program. We're very
excited about the changes and believe that campus will like
the changes as well. Last year, we hosted close to 400 people
on University Day and are certain that the number of guests
will continue to grow. Your co-operation on University Day
is appreciated and we look forward to working with you in these
next few weeks.
Until next time!
Monica
