Leaders of Tomorrow Honoured Today
Wednesday, March 26 saw eight individuals and one group honoured for their contributions to fellow students and activities on campus through leadership.
“It's important to honour students who have demonstrated leadership and have contributed to NSAC and to the community,” says Ashley Shepard, a student recruitment officer at NSAC. “Many of these students have been involved in a leadership role since high school and some even since junior high. NSAC hosting an event like the Student Leadership Award Banquet communicates to the students how NSAC staff and faculty appreciate their involvement with the university. Their outstanding commitment to NSAC student life deserves to be acknowledged.”
“It feels very nice to be recognized, a little overwhelming but greatly appreciated,” says Kathleen Atkinson, one of the NSAC students recognized.
"I felt very honoured to be NSAC's Rising Leader of the Year. It's great to know that my contributions to school life have been recognized and appreciated. It gives me more motivation to further my involvement in the future," says Nicole Lefebvre, another student recognized at the banquet.
Attendees of the banquet had the pleasure of listening to guest speaker Carl Duivenvoorden.
A 1983 Diploma of Farming Technology graduate and a 1986 B.Sc. graduate, Duivenvoorden has had a successful, yet varied, career. For the last 20 years he has been working in areas such as cereal research, international marketing, human resource development and energy efficiency. He has traveled to over 25 countries and has most recently become a student of Al Gore.
After reading Al Gore’s “An Inconvenient Truth” in 2007, Carl was given the opportunity to meet and be trained by Gore himself. With this training, Duivenvoorden has become one of just 21 Canadians with this distinction.
Congratulations to the following students on receiving an award. The entire NSAC community thanks them for your unwavering dedication to helping others.
