Special Collections
Since
its beginning in 1912 the Library has been a depository
of highly specialized and general literature and artifacts
concerning many aspects of agricultural education, agricultural
technology, research and extension in the Maritimes. Materials
have been donated primarily by people associated with
the College (20,000 items). The collection was formally
established in 1983 in the Library (renamed the MacRae
Library in 1990). A background history of the Agricola
Collections can be read here.
Three rooms on the
lower and uppermost level house the Agricola Collections.
The Collections contain archival material such as old
books, documents, maps, manuscripts, and photographs concerned
with agriculture, science, natural resources in Atlantic
Canada and Maritime literature. They also contain a large
collection of nineteenth and early twentieth century farming
and household implements and artifacts. The Agricola Collections
may be viewed by arrangement with Library staff.
Selections from
the Archives are on display throughout the year on the
main level. Specialexhibits are prepared annually for
the Alumni Homecoming Weekend in October.
