Information for Faculty
In compliance with copyright legislation, there are some restrictions on what materials can be placed on Library Reserve. These procedures outline the guidelines for what can and cannot be placed on Library Reserve and options for alternative to Library Reserve.
A Reserve item is a high demand item, identified by a faculty member as a useful item for a particular course. These items are held behind the Circulation Counter at the library on “Reserve” and must be used within the library unless the instructor requests otherwise. The loan period for these items is shorter than items in the library's general collection, usually TWO HOURS, unless otherwise requested.
Items that may be placed on Reserve:
Items that may go on "Reserve" include: supplementary readings and literature in the form of books, articles (print or electronic) or audio-visual materials. Original work, including lecture notes, presentations and old exams may also be placed on Reserve. Some items, such as student coursework, must have written permission from the student in order to place it on Reserve.
Books and Textbooks
Books put on Reserve must be an optional and supplementary source of information for students and copies amount to no more than 25 per cent of the required reading for the course. Rather than making copies of supplemental readings from books to provide to students, instructors are encouraged to place the books on Reserve.
Textbooks, upon request, may be put on Reserve if they meet the following conditions:
- Only one copy of the textbook may be placed on Reserve;
- The textbook must not be a "Desk Copy" that was provided freely by the publisher.
Copies of Articles
Faculty are encouraged to provide links to electronic resources such as full-text journal articles in the Library’s licensed databases instead of making photocopies and placing them on Reserve. When no acceptable alternative is available, however, a faculty member may put one paper copy of an article for every 30 students in a course of instruction up to a maximum of 3 copies. The following conditions must also apply:
- the paper copies are optional and/or supplementary readings and must be no more than 25% of the required reading for the course;
- the use of library reserve must not substitute for the purchase of books, course packs or other published materials.
- Full citations must be provided with each item
How to Request an Item for Library Reserve:
Reserve Requests can be made using the new Online Reserve Request form http://nsac.ca/library/reserves/default.cfm OR filling out a print form and bringing it to the MacRae Library. The form indicates compliance with copyright legislation.
Any questions or comments regarding these procedures may be directed to Sherree Miller, Head of Circulation, at 893-4576.
