Sowthistle

Sonchus arvensis is one of three weedy Sonchus spp. introduced into North America and is a common weed in all provinces in Canada. It reproduces both by seed and an extensive underground root system, which makes it very persistent.

Three insects have been introduced to control the weed: Cystiphora sonchi galls © S. Crozier 2004

Cystiphora sonchi, a leaf gall insect, reduces leaf area and photosynthate production. C. sonchi is established at one release site in Nova Scotia. Cystiphora sonchi galls © S. Crozier 2004

Liromyza sonchi, a leaf miner was approved for release in 1989. This insect did survive its first winter, however later surveys indicated the insect did not establish.

Tephritis dilacerata did not establish in Nova Scotia.
