Construction to Begin Soon on New Greenhouse at NSAC
Construction is scheduled to begin soon on a new greenhouse at NSAC.
“The new greenhouse will enhance learning and research opportunities for our students,” says Dr. Bernie MacDonald, Co-President and Vice President Administration at NSAC. “We will be able to provide state-of the-art growing facilities and give students hands-on experience that is in-line with advancements in the industry.”
The new greenhouse will contain compartments, allowing for greater control over variables affecting individual crop growth, using computerized monitoring systems.
Funding for the construction has been provided by the federal Knowledge Infrastructure Program. Two existing greenhouses at Cox Institute are also receiving renovations. Built in 1968, the greenhouses are being outfitted with thermal curtains and new heating pipes to reduce energy costs and allow for improved environmental controls.
“Students will have an up-to-date working greenhouse for the start of class,” says Dr. MacDonald. Renovations on one greenhouse will be complete by September 9. The second requires more extensive work and will be complete by mid October.
The greenhouses at NSAC are teaching and lab locations for students studying Plant and Environmental Sciences. These hands on learning experiences prepare students to tackle some of the biggest challenges related to industry today.
