Dr. Harold Chute
NSAC has lost a lost a good friend and contributor. Dr.
Harold Chute passed away at his home in Orono, Maine on Sept.
11, 2008. Harold was 87. A NSAC alumnus, Harold was an active
member of the Class of '44 and instrumental in several major
fund raising efforts on campus over the years.
At the forefront of poultry disease control, Harold made
considerable contributions to avian health through research,
diagnostics and teaching. |

Harold was involved with the development of disease control programs
and served on many national and state disease control committees
focusing on poultry disease management and inspection. His work
brought international recognition and he was invited to lecture
in Europe, Asia, the Middle East, South and Central America.
Harold achieved distinction not only as an avian pathologist but
as a consultant, entrepreneur, fund raiser, businessman, politician,
investor, public servant and philanthropist.
Harold was made an honorary associate of NSAC in 1976 and given
an honorary doctorate by the university in 1998. In 1994, he received
NSAC’s Distinguished Alumnus Award.
Some of the principles that drove Harold's life, and quest for
excellence in a variety of
fields, are embodied in two commencement addresses he delivered
to NSAC students. Harold spoke to students on the value of character,
duty to country, service to society, leadership, excellence, charity
and success.
The new Chute Animal Nutrition Centre, which will exemplify the
principals of Harold’s work in animal health, will be completed
this fall.
