Access Issues FAQ
After compiling help requests over the last several semesters,
we have selected the most common questions we have received.
The following questions and solutions may help you troubleshoot
any difficulties you may be having. If you have a problem
that is not addressed here, please contact us. If you
have any suggestions for this page, feel free to forward
them to us.
- I can’t login.
If you are trying to login for the first time, and your
given username and password are not working, please
double check to be certain you are not using capitals
or have made a typo. WebCT is case sensitive! If you
still cannot login, please contact us (dehelp@nsac.ca).
It could be that you recently joined the class and we
have simply not received notification from your professor
or the registry that you are now in the course. You
could be in our queue and your account will likely be
activated very shortly. Still, if you would prefer to
contact us directly, feel free to do so (please provide
us with your full name, student number, and the course(s)
you are registered in).
Also, not all courses at NSAC have a WebCT component.
You can verify if your course is in WebCT by searching
here http://webct.nsac.ca/webct/public/show_courses.pl.
- I have forgotten my password.
If you have forgotten your password, please contact
us (dehelp@nsac.ca).
- When I type in http://webct.nsac.ca,
I am redirected to another website altogether.
Spyware scripts are notorious for causing this type
of redirection when trying to access WebCT. Spyware,
also known as Adware, is software that has been downloaded
and installed on your machine, usually without your
knowledge. Spyware can come bundled with downloaded
media files from file-sharing applications (Kazaa, LimeWire,
etc.) and sometimes can find its way onto your machine
simply by visiting a website. Spyware gathers information
from the infected computer, tracking your web-browsing
and online spending habits. Typically, symptoms of spyware
include increased popup ads, unpredictable URL redirects,
and slow internet performance. In more serious cases,
spyware software can log passwords and send them back
to the software’s origin.
Anti-virus software does not always detect or remove
spyware. If you suspect your computer has been infected
with spyware and you do not have spyware removal software,
you can download either of the ones below for free:
- Spybot Search and Destroy
- http://www.download.com/3000-2144-10122137.html?part=104443&subj=dlpage&tag=button/
- Ad-Aware
SE - http://www.download.com/3000-2144-10045910.html?part=69274&subj=dlpage&tag=button/
- I am able to login, but the site doesn’t
seem to be working properly.
If you are having trouble accessing all areas in the
course and you are certain spyware is not an issue on
your system, there are three things you should investigate.
- Allow
Popups – WebCT uses popup windows
for Mail, Discussions, Quizzes, and Chat to work
properly.
- Enable
Cookies – For authentication to function
properly, cookies must be enabled.
- Check
Firewall settings - If you are running Windows
and have the XP Service Pack 2 (WinXP SP2) installed,
you may need to alter the firewall settings to use
WebCT.
- I am unable to access PDF files.
Various types of media (i.e. PDF, video and audio) used
in online courses will require plug-ins. These programs
are small, cost-free, and easy to download and install.
Please visit our Downloads
page for more information.
It is important to reboot
after you have made changes to your settings.
If you’re still having difficulty logging in, please
e-mail dehelp@nsac.ca.
Please remember to include your name, your student number,
and the name of the course you are attempting to access.
NSAC and its employees cannot be held responsible for
data loss or issues related to these resolutions.
