The Department of Business and Social Sciences is proposing
developing and implementing three new degree programs
by 2010:
BACHELOR OF ARTS
(Rural Community Studies)
BACHELOR OF MANAGEMENT
(Rural Studies)
BACHELOR OF TECHNOLOGY
(Entrepreneurship)
The BA will concentrate on exposure to all the elements
of rural studies. The Bachelor of Management degree emphasizes
the management skills necessary to function in today’s
society with the ability to concentrate on a particular
subject area such as agriculture, international development,
environment sciences or landscape horticulture. The post
diploma Bachelor of Technology in Entrepreneurship is targeted
to graduates of community college programs such as horticulture,
forestry resources, food and nutrition management, golf
course technician, tourism and travel management, etc. who
wish to continue on to obtain a degree in entrepreneurship.
These new programs will also share features somewhat unique
to NSAC. These include the requirement for students to participate
in an internship to highlight the applied nature of the
disciplines – consistent with other NSAC programs.
Students will also be encouraged to foster a global perspective
with a semester abroad at universities or colleges offering
similar or related programs. The program will be designed
with a focus on case studies and field tours, including
a required international study tour, which will be included
in the fee structure. In addition, students will be exposed
to a broad array of sciences, technologies and business
knowledge.
While these new degrees broaden the scope and widen the
recruiting base for NSAC, they remain consistent with NSAC’s
vision and mandate to serve rural communities.
