History
The NSAC ‘Rick Russell’
Woodsmen Competition
The NSAC Woodsmen first started during the 1965-1966 academic
year when a small group of NSAC students travelled to Montreal
and accepted an invitation from MacDonald College to compete
at their Winter Carnival Woodsmen Competition.
The NSAC Woodsmen team has steadily grown since its formation
in 1965. With the addition of the University of New Brunswick
and the Sir Sanford Flemming College competitions, the NSAC
was getting a lot of experience travelling and competing
at Timbersport competitions.
Rick Russell first enrolled at the NSAC in September of
1977. Rick quickly followed his older brother’s steps
and joined the Woodsmen Team and played as a student for
three years. After Rick’s tenure as a student was
over he began working in the Hog Barn and stayed involved
with woodsmen and became an Assistant Coach in 1980. Rick
was assistant coach for one year and in 1981 Rick took over
the reigns as head coach of the NSAC Woodsmen Team.
In 1985 Rick laid the groundwork for what would become
one of the college’s biggest and anticipated weekends.
Rick organized the first Woodsmen competition to be hosted
by the NSAC. The competition was labelled ‘The NSAC
Woodsmen Competition’ and has been a popular event
for students, faculty and the community every winter since
1985.
Rick remained head coach of the NSAC Woodsmen team up until
his passing in July of 2004. Rick was not just the leader
of the NSAC Woodsmen team he was an ambassador to the sport
and he helped improve and regulate the competitions with
the formation of CILA (Canadian Intercollegiate Lumberjacking
Association).
In recognition of Rick’s contribution to the NSAC
Woodsmen Team, organizers decided to add Rick’s name
to the title of the NSAC competition. This year the college
is celebrating their 21st Annual NSAC ‘Rick Russell’
Woodsmen Competition. The NSAC Woodsmen Team has grown from
the original seven players in 1965 to the current 28 players
and four coaches, this would not have been possible without
Rick’s dedication to the team.
"Life's journey is not to arrive at your grave safely
in a well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways,
totally worn out, shouting WOW...what a Ride" (Rick
Russell)
